Damsel's Guide to Drilling! All (and more) that you need to know! (Ghost Blue info pending)

RAAARRRR!  Another guide!  Yay?  Maybe...everyone liked my last one...

Anyway.  This guide is going to describe ways to increase your success in drilling EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT A SENSE TYPE.  Actually, it should help you ESPECIALLY if you're not a sense type!

    • Note to other experienced players: If you want to help by contributing info on map soil types/depths, it would be much appreciated~! ^^

    The essentials:

        How to drill:

    1. Talk to Marky** for a free Basic Drill, or buy one from Item Girl.
    2. Go to your Items panel (hit "i" while not in the chat box)
    3. Click the drills tab
    4. Double click a drill, OR drag it to the drill slot on your Equipment panel (hit "e" while not in the chat box)
    5. Hit "D" while not in the chat box
    6. Click the ground

    **

        What drill should you use?

That's all well and good, right?  But how do you know what kind of soil is what?  Well, no offense, but I hope that to some degree, you can tell just by looking.  I mean, grass is obviously grass, dirt is obviously dirt, sand is obviously sand, and so on.  But there are a few areas that can be tricky to figure out.  So for simplicity sake, I will just go through and list as many as I can.

    Coral Fields
        10m max depth

    Loose/Fragile soil.  SAND.

    Land/GRASS.

    Wood boards.  ARTIFICIAL.

    Dark Cave
        20m max depth

Just like mines, caves have a strange soil type.  It's both ROCK and ARTIFICIAL.

    Desert Beach Fields
        10m max depth

    SAND.

    Land/GRASS.

    Wood boards.  ARTIFICIAL.

    Pyramid Dungeon
20m max depth (Excluding Tut...I need to know the depth at Tut.  ^^)

Don't be fooled.  It looks like tiles, but is actually SAND.

    Crystal Copper Mine
         20m max depth

Mines have a strange soil type.  It's both ROCK and ARTIFICIAL.

    Land/GRASS.

    Poppuri Dungeon
        30m max depth

    Land/GRASS.

Mud/Sedimentary.  WET SOIL.  (Yeah, they throw you for a loop with that one.  Sticking in puddles that are a different soil type!)

    Caballa Relics Fields
        40m max depth

    Land/DIRT.

    Stone tiles.  ARTIFICIAL.

    Land/GRASS.

    Land/DIRT and GRASS.

    Stone tiles.  ARTIFICIAL.

        130m max depth.

Mines have a strange soil type.  It's both ROCK and ARTIFICIAL.

    Swamp Fields
40m max depth EXCEPT in the "Maze of Forest" fields, which have 120m, and Tenterlion, which has 200m max.

    Asphalt/ROCK.  Also ARTIFICIAL.

    Wood boards.  ARTIFICIAL.

    Land/GRASS.

It looks like water, but it counts as ROCK or ARTIFICIAL.

    Path to Mermaid Palace
        80m max depth

Just like mines, caves have a strange soil type.  It's both ROCK and ARTIFICIAL.  Path to Mermaid might also count as DEEP-SEA SOIL.

    Part Two: Hints and Tips~

OK, if you're not a sense type, or if you're a low level sense type, drilling can be hard.  There ARE things you can do to increase your chances of successfully finding things.

The first thing to understand is how DA helps you drill.  High DA will keep you from drilling where nothing is buried.  DA will alert you if you are or are not drilling a spot where something is buried.

Something is there!  See the light bulb over my head?  That's DA at work!

There's nothing there!  See the squiggly over my head? That's DA at work too!

All class types will get the light bulb or squiggly from time to time.  The higher your DA, the more often you will get those reactions.  At 90 DA, you will get the light bulb/squiggly 100% of the time.

Next, you need to know how items tend to spawn.  They usually spawn in overlapping grids.  When you find an area with a lot of buried items, it's a "hotspot".

That's a picture of a small hotspot.  I put the arrows on it to point out a very important fact. If you find a hotspot, dig in strait horizontal or vertical lines.  As you can see from the image, that's how they line up.

Where are the best places to find hotspots?  Believe it or not, on or around portals are great places to find things.

Things also tend to spawn around landscape objects such as trees, bushes, stumps, rocks, statues, etc.  Landscape objects vary from map to map.

Edges of maps also tend to be good places to find buried items.

There's one more thing you need to know.  I have a technique I'm going to share with you all that I've never really seen/heard anybody else mention.  I've even had people argue that I'm wrong about it, but I've tested it and tested it, and nearly all of my guild mates have used this technique sucessfully.

Items land on other items.  When you dig up an item there's a very decent chance it will land on OR near something else buried!  I would estimate it happens about 60% of the time.  It's not constant, so don't expect results 100% of the time.  But if you're a sense type that hasn't yet learned Basic Detect, or if you're not a sense type at all, this technique can be very helpful!

I even made a little slide show demonstrating it working!  ^__^

    Detect Skills

There are currently 2 Detection skills.  They make red targets appear on the ground to show where stuff is buried.  (They can be seen in nearly all my screen shots.)  Only sense type characters can learn them.

First is Basic Detect, which can be learned by both lions and foxes at TM35.

Item Detector is the skill I'm using in the screen shots.  Some people dislike it, because of its tendency to fail.  Also, I will give fair warning to anyone who chooses to learn this skill: When ever there is an event that requires drilling, Item Detector gets a temporary nerf that causes it to FAIL MORE OFTEN.  I don't know how many other people have noticed that, but I sure as heck have!  >[

    Other helpful skills

While Basic Detect and Item Detector are the only detection skills currently, they're not the only ones that assist with drilling.  Sixth Sense boosts DA, and can be learned by both foxes and lions at TM1.

Invincible Drilling is a skill that allows you to drill uninterrupted even if you're attacked.  This skill can be learned by both lions and foxes at TM1.  However, I will give you a warning: If you're in an area where things can kill you in 2 hits, Invincible Drilling could cost you your life by keeping you from instantly reacting or running away.  However, it is a VERY useful skill, and there is no reason not to learn it.  Just use caution in dangerous areas.  ;)

If any more drilling assistance skills are added, I will edit them in at that time.  ^^

    Phoneuma:

Soil Types Sound Effects: You can tell the soil type when you drill. Sometimes you can tell before you start, right after you click where you want to drill. While your drill is in idle mode, listen closely to the sound it makes. Grass, Sand and Rock types typically make the same sound and so are hard to distinguish. Wood tends to yield a hollow sound. Metal and Tile will cause your drill to make a high-pitched ratchety sound. Watery types will make a bubbly bloopy-bloop sound.  Snow I think has a unique sound as well, perhaps muffled. Need someone to verify this info, though.

Tree Troves: Basic Detection and Item Detector cannot be seen through tree leaves, so be sure to check behind trees even if you see Sense characters drilling in the area. Odds are they overlooked the forested areas.

Hidden Areas: You can drill off the maps if you know where to look. I won't reveal any locations because then I would have a more Fdrilling in my secret spots. Technically still on the map, there are places where you can drill that are outside the standard walkable map grid. I call these places Hidden Areas because sometimes you can't even see your character while drilling.

X Marks The Spot: If you find a good place to drill, make note of it. Places like the Music Room in Phantom School have hotspots in the same areas. On some occasions, those hotspots may yield very valuable finds. For example, one morning I drilled up 13 Metronomes in a row, then 7 Canvas 2's, then 7 Canvas 3's, then 7 Canvas 1's, and a couple exceptional equips which I NPCed for 40k+ galder.

He suggested I include the value of DA needed for 100% chance of lightbulb/squiggly.

I will not edit in every point of discussion in the thread, for the record.  Info will be uncovered in discussion, and only if there are repeated questions about something already mentioned will I edit it in to the guide, unless it's something relating directly to existing info.  Thanks~

Great guide, Damsel! Definately great! Good job~

Figured Im could mention that adding to the DA part, that having a total of 90 DA is all that is needed for having a full detection rate for lightbulb/squiggly? I figure its handy for those at higher levels to know so they dont get a full crazy boosted DA set when they maybe dont need much at all.

My opinion is mine alone. Stop making assumptions.

Been a while since I saw a great guide in this god-forsaken place, might as well to add information about drill related skills such as Basic Detection, etc.

    Addendumst.

Soil Types: Sound Effects: You can tell the soil type when you drill.

@Damsel: You need Cherry Blossom soil types too if you want to be complete.
@Damsel: Swamp Dungeon has Grass type terrain also (don't ask me where, I'm just quoting)
@Damsel: Black Swamp has Grass, Yellow, Rocky and Wet soil types (think you missed the Rock one in Field 5/6)
@Damsel: You forgot the caves (like Path to Coral) that are Artificial type
@Damsel: Path to Oops is Sandy (dunno where you want to put that one)
@Damsel: Poppuri has Yellow, Rocky, Grassy and Wet soil types
@Damsel: Megaopolis Forest has Rocky too
@Damsel: Nora was and will be Artificial
@Damsel: The Forgotten Tower is 150m~250m
    @Damsel: Boss Depths:

    Tombeth: 40m~60m
    Skull: 40m~60m
    Blood: 100m~120m

    I forgot cherry.  @.@

Swamp Dungeon is funny...I'll have to go hunting for the mysterious grass and poke it with my diamond drill to make sure it actually counts as grass!  0.0  (As deep as it is, there's really no wet soil drill that works down there anyway.  >.&g
