Chapter 12 - Part 3
“You’re wrong. If I’m not human…then what the hell am I?!” he stood and flipped over a table that was next to him. Books, paper, and glass all hit the floor with a loud crash. “There’s no need to destroy the lab 001.” Zero stood still but kept his back turned to Mika. “You help my plan succeed, I’ll tell you all about your past.” Zero knew Mika wasn’t someone to be trusted. “Tell me one thing to prove that you aren’t just lying to me.” Zero demanded. “Do you really think I’d sink that low 001? Or should I say Katsuma?” Zero flinched and knew he was telling the truth. Mika was the second person to call him by that name. Mika opened the top drawer of his desk and held up an old-looking gold and silver heart-shaped locket. “That’s yours.” He said and tossed it to Zero. He opened the locket and saw the words “To Katsu” engraved on one side and a still clock on the other. “Where did you get this?” Zero asked and tried to remember the small object. “You were wearing it that day when I found you washed up on the beach. I was going to use it to blackmail you or something since it looked like it was important.” Mika shrugged. “Well, since it does seem like you can tell me some things, I’ll help you with your plan.”
Chapter 13 - Part 1
Ari and Shadow made their way back into the event garden. They reached the bottom of the stairs and Shadow put Ari down. He placed his hand on Ari’s hurt ankle and cast cure. “Try to stand up now.” He said. Ari cautiously picked herself up and stood slowly. “Does it still hurt?” Shadow asked anxiously. “Not at all. It’s perfectly fine now.” Ari started to hop in place and walked around. “Don’t go crazy. You should still be careful.” He said as he watched Ari parading around the garden. “Aw, don’t be a killjoy!” Ari whined. Shadow began to laugh. “What are you laughing at?” Ari was now confused. “I’m laughing at you of course. I haven’t seen you all hyper before, it’s weird.” He looked down at her and placed his hand softly on her head. Ari looked up at Shadow and stared at him silently. “Well it looks like that calms you down.” He said. “And now we need to talk about what happened.” Ari tilted her head to the side and stared at Shadow. “Zero let me go.” She felt confused just saying those words. “Let you go? Why? Did you beat him up or something?” Shadow looked as confused as Ari. “I’d rather not say.” A sudden flashback of what happened in the forest ran through her mind. “Remind me to kill that weirdo when I see him again.” She shuddered. Shadow, who looked completely baffled, simply stared at Ari. “You know, your weird statements aren’t really answering my question.” He sighed. “Sorry. I’m really not too sure what I’m saying anyway.” Ari let out a half-hearted laugh. “Well I guess we can talk about it tomorrow. It’s getting late anyway. Shadow turned and started walking towards the exit gate. Ari still felt like she hadn’t seen Shadow in a long time. Still re-adjusting to the thought, she happily followed after him again.
Chapter 13 - Part 2
Ari set up camp as usual and noticed Shadow wasn’t doing the same again. “I hope you don’t plan on guarding me all night again.” She sighed worriedly. “That’s the plan. Shadow the guard-dragon, at your service, whether you like it or not.” He grinned and did a cheesy bow. “Come on, it only makes me feel all guilty.” Ari protested. “Sorry, I’ve already made my decision, nothing will change my mind.” He said in a teasingly upbeat tone. “Shadow…” Ari sighed again. “Fine. Good night.” As her last attempt to change his mind, Ari casually walked over to Shadow and hugged him tightly. “You don’t have to stand guard, I’ll be fine.” She pleaded and looked up at him with puppy eyes. “Nice try,” he hugged her with one hand and patted her head with the other. “But I already told you, nothing will change my mind.” He looked down at her and smiled mockingly. Ari simply pouted and walked into her tent.
Chapter 14 - Part 1
Time passed slowly as Ari stared into the darkness of her tent. She sighed silently, tossed her blanket aside and stood up. She looked at her watch and saw it was barely the lonely hour of midnight. She decided she couldn’t sleep and stepped outside. A rush of cold air immediately brushed against Ari’s face. She spotted Shadow leaned against a tree; sleeping. “I’m starting to think he likes sleeping in the cold…” Ari whispered to herself. She approached him slowly; trying not to wake him up. She stood in front of Shadow and looked down at him. She saw that he was shivering slightly. She crouched down and waved her hand in front of his face. There was no response from Shadow. She went back to her tent and walked back out carrying a blanket. Ari stood in front of Shadow again, feeling a bit awkward. She took a deep breath and sat beside him. Shadow still didn’t wake up. Ari gently placed the blanket over Shadow’s shoulders and then rested her head against his arm. She closed her eyes and quickly began to drift off into the darkness of sleep. Ari was more than half-asleep when a feeling of warmth surrounded her; she wanted to open her eyes but couldn’t gather up enough motivation to. The feeling was oddly familiar, safe, warm, soft. Ari began to be more aware of things as she woke up. She could still feel a breeze and could hear a noise she was too sleepy to recognize. She opened one eye weakly, but she couldn’t yet focus on what she saw. As the blurs began to take shape, Ari realized that she wasn’t sitting beside Shadow anymore. She now could see that the warmth was her blanket and that the noise she heard was a heartbeat. She was being held by Shadow again. After figuring out where she was, Ari felt wide-awake. “Uh…did I wake you up?” Shadow’s flustered voice startled her. “No…I don’t think you did.” Ari mumbled and stared up at him. “I was just gonna move you over…” he tried to explain. “Anyway, you shouldn’t even be out here, you’re safer inside your tent. So go back there.” He looked away from her quickly. “Shadow, why do you insist on standing guard anyway?” Ari asked quietly. Shadow was silent for a long moment. He softly placed his hand on her head like he did earlier. “Because you’re something worth protecting…” he said awkwardly. They were both silent for another minute. “Please don’t hate me for this, okay?” he said and brushed her hair to the side. “Huh…?” Ari was confused, but was too embarrassed to care much. Shadow then leaned closer to her and kissed her forehead gently. Ari then began to feel like her head was spinning. She stayed silent and stared at Shadow with wide-eyes. “I’m sorry… by the way you’re looking at me, I’ll guess you hated that, right?” He looked away from her, but she could still see he looked uncomfortable and disappointed. “I don’t hate it. It just surprised me…” Ari choked out her answer. “You don’t? So it’s okay?” Shadow managed to look her straight in the eye. Ari stared back and just nodded. “Well…you know, let’s just go back to sleep.” He said and held Ari’s head to his chest. “’Kay…” Ari yawned. “And Shadow,” she said slowly. “I’m glad you’re here with me.” She looked over at him and smiled sweetly. “And I’m sure I always will be.” He said and stared out past everything with the same distant eyes that fit him so well.
