Each card contains a life property. For the first idetification use cards with the highest life and the folowing cards could be low life cards seeing that life can be only  carried over from first idetification each sitting. It sometimes helps to be consistent when your choosing. It also helps if you say the items out loud. ^_^

More combos = more life.
Like on the 13th combo onwards(personal experience), you get a full bar of gauge which adds +1 life.
And +Life combo = 1.5*current combo.
Means if you got 0 combo, or 1 combo, you get +50% gauge.

I was able to get to stage 14 with 9 lives. ;)
Just got lucky with combos ;)

Made a lot of mules just to get Drop Rate cards & Don Giuvanni Card(+6 Life)
And it's preferred you use Card #7 or #8, which adds only 3 life + 30-70% gauge. ( Eg Bunny Maid Card or Character-type(Lion, Fox, Bunny, Buffalo, etc.) cards)

However, you cannot use Etc. Cards, like Empty Card.
And you can't use Fortune Cards too. Eg: Drop Rate Card 99, or Exp Card 103.
BUT...
You can get cards like Nora mummy, or something. Card #4.
It adds 4 life & 60-80% gauge.

With 1st combo, your life multiplier remains the same, but the more combos you get, the more lifes you get.
- Hazel's trying to reach 10 life though ;) -

If you're under 2 HP and are going into a new level you have a VERY high chance of wasting a good card.

In other words stop when you reach two hp and are going into a new stage.
