Yes, that works remarkably well. Every once in a while I have God awful lag for no apparent reason and I just knock my graphics down a few pegs to brilliant results.

If the graphics level was the problem, the game would automatically re-adjust the settings to counter the problem.

Would you have any programs running in the background, like Instant Messengers, perhaps? I usually set the graphics level to Above Average for that. My only gripe about is that you can't tell if you're cursed or not when you have your settings below High.
