This is the place to be if you want to ask questions or post feedback regarding our eleventh tournament, "Ring of Fire".

Please do not ask any questions that have already been answered in official posts already, we want to keep this thread "clean" for relevant discussion of the tournament. For that same reason, we kindly ask that there be no off-topic chat on this thread. Anything not related to the tournament is considered off-topic. =)

What we would like to see here, in addition to your questions, are suggestions about how to improve this tournament for future events. It's not every day that we run a character-specific tournament, so we are interested to hear your feedback. If you think there is a better format we should be using, let's hear it. If you disagree with the method of entry, we're open to suggestions.

To clarify the line on "exploits" in terms that the players have requested in the past: Auto Shot is not okay, grabs are okay, steps are okay, Dark Assassin's "air otto" is not considered an auto shot since it cuts off at 5 hits; any more would make it unauthorized. Infinite combos which do not terminate at 5 hits (lire otto, for example) will be disqualified if they exceed 5 hits. Combos which rely on a finite number of MP bars to execute are not infinite combos, and are therefore authorized (Ex. Big Shot x3 + Grab).

As stated in rule 3, the Game Masters are going to be the ones interpreting the rules, so please exercise common sense and competitive integrity when you play.

Official Rules

Exploitation of game mechanics, such as "auto shot" (including Shisa's), is grounds for immediate disqualification.

No unsportsmanlike conduct.

Game Masters will have the final call in administration of tournament rules.

Arguing with a GM's call in game is grounds for immediate disqualification.

Players may only use the Jin character in this tournament. Either job of Jin is acceptable.

All matches (except the Final) must be played on the Temple of Fire map, No Item Mode, in a room designated by the GM.

All players are responsible for checking the "Tournament Square" forum for updates to the official rules, announcements, and match assignments.

In the event that a fighter disconnects prior to the match beginning, a restart may be declared at the GM's discretion. If a fighter disconnects after the match has begun, no restarts will be allowed. This rule applies only to matches played in the Playoffs, qualifying rounds will not be restarted.

Players may join ONE and only one open qualifying room. Entering a second open qualifying room will subject the account to administrative action in addition to permanent tournament disqualification.

Fast Match will activate after 5 minutes.

Any match exceeding 20 minutes in length will end in disqualification for all competitors.

There will be no time limit for the Final match.

Disruption of qualifier activities is grounds for actions up to and including account closure.

Match results in the qualifiers will be determined first by least deaths, then by most kills, and finally by order of elimination in the event of a tie.

There will be no gear or item restrictions during the tournament. Gear MAY be changed at any time in the tournament room up to 5 seconds prior to match start.

All entrants' forum and game accounts must be in good standing at the time of the tournament in order to participate.

All participants' accounts must have been registered before September 1st, 2009.

Chase the Ace just finished, and it was a great success. We were very happy that 276 unique competitors were able to enter--a record for us!--and 1073 qualifier matches were played (not counting matches that weren't recorded due to technical glitches!). However, conspicuously absent from the top of the roster was Jin! So to raise awareness of the Fighter (and Shisa too), we're hosting a Jin-only tournament!

Key Details

Who: 144 participants who enter qualifier matches. Anyone with Jin unlocked may participate in the qualifiers, but each player may enter ONLY ONE qualifier room. ENTERING MULTIPLE QUALIFIER ROOMS IS GROUNDS FOR ACCOUNT ACTION.
What: Single-elimination unseeded survival tournament, entered by winning qualifier matches.
When: Thursday, October 1st from 5:00 PM ~ 8:00 PM PDT.
Where: Gardosen Server, Free Class PvP, in rooms specifically created and supervised by the GM staff.
Why: To give Jin the recognition he deserves as a fighter and engage in combat on difficult terrain.

Qualifiers:

Qualifying for entry into the Playoffs will be accomplished by placing in the top 3 players of a qualifier room. Similar to the Hells Bells tournament, rather than hold registration for entry we are going to allow anyone interested to enter a qualifier room and compete.

PLAYERS MAY ONLY PLAY IN ONE QUALIFYING ROOM. ANY PLAYER FOUND TO HAVE PLAYED IN MORE THAN ONE QUALIFYING GAME WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THIS AND ALL FUTURE TOURNAMENTS!

Playoffs:

Rooms in the playoffs will be created and identified by the GMs, with competitors being invited directly by the GMs. Competitors who have qualified will be told where to wait for an invite, so for this reason, it is MANDATORY that all competitors are able to accept room invites by ensuring that their "Auto Invite Block" option is UNCHECKED.

In the Final round, the top two players from each side of the bracket will be paired together as a team to fight in a 2v2 against the other side for the championship.

Notes: Since the Finals are a 2v2 competition, both players on the winning team will receive the 1st place prize and both players on the losing team will receive the 2nd place prize.

Greetings, tournament fighters!

The names highlighted in yellow are the top 24, who will be going on to the Playoffs to be played tomorrow from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM PDT.

If you are on the yellow portion of this list, report for battle tomorrow at 4 PM. The first match will be Hiari vs. Yigs. The winner of that match will them immediately fight RyokuSky. The winner of that match will then immediately fight Only1Viet, so on and so forth until the running King fights xCow in the final round.

Every match will be played single elimination with the same settings as the qualifiers, except that the time limit is now 10 minutes. Fast Match will still start at 5 minutes into the match. If a time limit is reached in the playoffs, BOTH players drop and the ladder will resume with the next two competitors, except for the final matches in which there is no time limit.

Congratulations also to the 12 iPod winners who stood tall as the King of their room at the end of competition on Thursday. Each player is listed next to the GM who hosted their room. Please note that players may only receive one physical prize per tournament, so in the event that one of these players is eligible for a game console from the finals, they will win the console and the second-to-last King in that room will win the iPod.

[POINTS] Chase the Ace - King of the Hill

This post contains thorough explanations of the methodology and formulas involved in tabulating the rating points that will be used in the "Chase the Ace" Qualifiers to determine the Playoff roster and seeding. If you are not interested in the exact math, a short summary follows:

Everyone starts with an equal number of points (1500)
Points change after every match in the Qualifiers is played, your points will be updated in realtime
Winners gain points, losers lose points
The change in points is always the same, so the winner wins the exact number of points that the loser loses
More points are won if the loser has more points to begin with
Similarly, this also means that you'll lose more points if you lose to someone with less points than you
More points are won if the winner finishes with more lives remaining (A 3-0 blowout is worth more than a 1-0 near miss)
It is possible with someone with less games played to have more points, if their record and opponents are stronger

Alright, for those still with us, we have the full summary. The rating points calculated in this qualifier system are based on Arpad Elo's rating system for chess. Although this system was originally designed for rating chess players, it has been adapted to other sports (most notably Association Football) and non-sports games, including online games. Professional leagues and sanctioned tournaments of Trading Card Games also commonly use Elo ratings to rank players.

The core concept of an Elo rating is that it represents a player's relative strength in comparison to other players, which allows you to calculate the expected result of a match between two rated players A and B. This expected score is derived for player A from the following formula:

Player A's Expected Score = 1/1+10^(Player B's Rating - Player A's Rating)/400

(So the expected score for player B is the reverse: Player A's Expected Score = 1/1+10^(Player A's Rating - Player B's Rating)/400)

If you add the two expected scores, you'll always get 1, because this formula estimates the chances of Player A beating Player B, or vice versa.

Let's say GM_Moshup and GM_Chaos both fight at the beginning of the tournament, and Chaos won with 3 lives remaining (that's embarassing). Both players would have a rating of 1500 since they just started, so they would both have an expected score of 0.5, representing a 50% chance (by the numbers) of each one winning.

You can paste this formula into Microsoft Calculator to see the expected score of 0.5 for yourself: 1/(1+10y((1500-1500)/400))

To calculate how many points Moshup is going to lose, we use this formula:

Player A's New Rating = Player A's Current Rating + K(Player A's Actual Score - Player A's Expected Score)

In our case, Moshup lost so his actual score is 0 (winning would be 1), and his expected score was 0.5, so we can plug it in:

Moshup's New Rating = 1500 + K(0-0.5)

You know that Moshup is losing points because a negative number [K(-0.5)] is being added to his current rating, but what's K?

The K factor is a variable used in the Elo system to determine the maximum change in rating that can occur after each update to the rating. This is an important part of helping the ratings meaningfully reflect the actual skill of a player. A high K factor means your rating changes faster because each update is bigger, so similarly a low K factor indicates less change in rating. In chess, the K factor changes based on your rating; it starts off really high and gets really low, to reflect that when you're just starting out, not much is known about your skill level, so the goal is to quickly get you to the relative skill range that you should be in. Once you've established yourself and you're ostensibly only playing against other players of relative skill to you, you want the change to be small so that a single update doesn't put you ahead of a player who is actually better than you. FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs, the world chess federation) uses a K factor of 25 for new players and 10 for pros. That's great since they're trying to identify Grandmaster chess players over years of play and hundreds of competitions, but we're trying to rank players in only 8 hours, so our system is going to move faster.

In this tournament, the K factor will change based on how many lives the winner has remaining when the match ends by the following chart:

1 Life Remaining: K=32
2 Lives Remaining: K=40
3 Lives Remaining: K=48

So now that we know how the K factor changes based on the outcome of the match, the formula can be resolved to Moshup's New Rating of 1476.

Since Moshup's rating decreased by 24 points, Chaos' rating must have increased by 24 points to 1524. You can try it for yourself: Chaos' New Rating = 1500+48*(1-0.5)

From this, it's easy to see how the K factor changes your rating. Since both players had an expected score of 0.5, the change in rating is going to be half of K. If the difference in rating between two players is high enough, it's actually possible for no rating change to occur. Even if you blow out the noob with a 3-0 win, if your expected score is .990 you won't get any points from that victory, this will occur at a difference of around 800 points. It is unlikely in my opinion that this level will be reached by anyone in the tournament due to the short spread of games being played, but if someone *does* get to 2300, they won't get any points from fresh blood. I say this is unlikely because even at a max K factor of 48 (every game you play is a win and a blowout), most of your opponents will be fresh blood (1500 rating), therefore it should take over 300 games to reach the point where you no longer gain rating. At 8 hours to play, over 35 games an hour would be difficult to achieve.

Now GM_Chaos is the king of the room, and GM_Takeda enters and beats him, but just barely with only one life remaining.

GM_Chaos' Expected Score = 1/(1+10y((1500-1524)/400))
GM_Takeda's Expected Score = 1/(1+10y((1524-1500)/400))

GM_Chaos' Expected Score = 0.534 (round to 3 digits)
GM_Takeda's Expected Score = 0.466

GM_Chaos' New Rating = 1524+32*(0-0.534)
GM_Takeda's New Rating = 1500+32*(1-0.466)

GM_Chaos' New Rating = 1507
GM_Takeda's New Rating = 1517

Here you can see that even though Chaos lost to a weaker opponent (no offense Takeda), the fact that Takeda barely won makes the loss only 17 points; less than Chaos won from Moshup, so he's still ahead. Still, 17 points is more than the 16 (half of K=32) that would be lost if he faced an even opponent, so Chaos should get his act together if he wants to qualify.

Now GM_Takeda's the king, and GM_Moshup rejoins the room. Takeda's rating is 1517, Moshup's is 1476, run the numbers:

GM_Moshup's Expected Score = 1/(1+10y((1517-1476)/400))
GM_Takeda's Expected Score = 1/(1+10y((1476-1517)/400))

GM_Moshup's Expected Score = 0.441
GM_Takeda's Expected Score = 0.559

Takeda and Moshup fight pretty frequently, I'd say they're pretty evenly matched. Their ratings disagree, but only slightly; they favor Takeda slightly to win because he has a better rating currently. Since they only have 7:30 to duke it out, they hit the time limit, causing the game to end in a tie. If you consider a tie to be half a win and half a loss, then your actual score when tying is 0.5. This works just fine in the Elo formula for ratings change:

GM_Moshup's New Rating = 1476+32*(0.5-0.441)
GM_Takeda's New Rating = 1517+32*(0.5-0.559)

GM_Moshup's New Rating = 1478
GM_Takeda's New Rating = 1515

So if you'll notice here, Takeda actually *lost* points (albeit only 2 points) for that tie. This is because Takeda was expected to perform better than Moshup; Takeda was expected to *win* the match. Since Takeda did not win the match, his rating will suffer for it.

In our tournament, although there will be multiple rooms, there is one master rating database. So no matter which room you play in, your cumulative rating from your prior record will be used to compare you to your opponent and the result will update to the master roster. We may not publish your ratings in realtime, but they are calculated in the order you fought your matches in, so they will always be accurate when they are calculated.

To clarify the line on "exploits" in terms that the players have requested in the past: Auto Shot is not okay, grabs are okay, steps are okay, Dark Assassin's "air otto" is not considered an auto shot since it cuts off at 5 hits; any more would make it unauthorized. Infinite combos which do not terminate at 5 hits (lire otto, for example) will be disqualified if they exceed 5 hits. Combos which rely on a finite number of MP bars to execute are not infinite combos, and are therefore authorized (Ex. Big Shot x3 + Grab).

Once a player enters a sanctioned Qualifier room, they are bound to fight that room's King. If either player leaves the room, the match shall be scored as a 3-0 win for the opponent.

In the event that a fighter disconnects at any time during a qualifier match, the match shall be scored as a 3-0 win for the opponent. In the playoffs, a restart may be declared if a fighter disconnects prior to match start, at the GM's discretion.

All players are responsible for checking the "Tournament Square" forum for updates to the official rules, announcements, and match assignments.

Any match exceeding 7 minutes, 30 seconds in length in the qualifiers will result in a tie for both players, with the King retaining control of the room.

Any match exceeding 10 minutes in length in the playoffs will result in a loss for both players.

It's hard to believe that nine tournaments have come and gone, and that we are now preparing for our tenth. Equally auspicious is the date of this posting, exactly one year after we kicked off our first tournament. Fight For Honor began on September 11th, 2008, and its conclusion saw BT crowned champion. Credit is due also to runners-up Zero, Blandy and Dracox.

Here at Ntreev USA we are extremely proud of our competitive community, and consider the tournaments to be the pinnacle of the art of war. The competition is fierce, and in honor of our first tournament's anniversary, we have been working hard to present a format which will encourage maximum participation from all comers. We are pleased to present to you the "Chase the Ace" tournament.

Key Details

Who: 24 finalists selected by dominance from the qualifiers. Anyone who thinks they have what it takes to be King of the Hill may participate in the qualifiers.
What: Single-elimination seeded King of the Hill tournament, entered by 8 hours of qualifier matches.

Qualifiers:

Qualifying for entry into the Playoffs will be accomplished by winning as much as possible during the eight combined hours that qualifier rooms will be open. Similar to the Hells Bells tournament, rather than hold registration for entry we are going to allow anyone interested to enter a qualifier room and compete. Unlike the Hells Bells tournament, you are welcome to play in as many rooms as you can get into, because it's your overall record that will determine who makes it into the Playoffs.

Beginning at 4:00 PM PDT on Wednesday, September 23rd, each Game Master will create a room on the Gardosen server's Free Class PvP channel. These will be the only rooms created on Gardosen at the time, to make them easier to identify. The goal is for players to enter any one of the rooms and fight. When the rooms are created, the first player who enters will by default be considered the "King of the Hill", or King of that room, and the second player who enters will be the challenger. The same rooms will be re-used for the duration of the qualifiers. When a match is over, the winner stays in the room and is crowned King, the loser leaves for a new Challenger to enter. The King may keep fighting in the room until they lose, racking up more points for each win. The loser is welcome to try again by entering a different tournament room. But be warned, there are only so many rooms available and many players will be expected to be interested, so do your best not to lose your seat!

For each win, the winner will receive points based on the strength of the opponent they faced, as well as how many lives they had remaining at the end of the match. In turn, the loser will lose the same number of points won by the winner, so in essence, the loser has given their points to the winner. Since the games have a time limit of 7 minutes, 30 seconds, the server will activate "Fast Match" mode after 5 minutes to encourage match completion. Scoring will be based on the actual number of lives remaining at the end of a match, so a player seeking the most points is advised to end the game before the 5-minute mark. If a room reaches the time limit of 7 minutes, 30 seconds, the game will end in a tie. The challenger by default will be removed from the room, but the player with less points will actually gain points in the event of a tie because it is expected that the player with more points will win, not tie. Please see the "[POINTS]" post for more details on scoring.

At the end of the qualifiers at 8:00 PM PDT on Thursday, September 24th, the King of the Hill in each room will win an iPod. After that, the final scores will be posted, determining the roster and seeding of the final 24 competitors who will move on to fight in the Playoffs on Friday.

Playoffs:

The Playoffs will be a true King of the Hill competition, where the winner stays and the loser leaves, all the way up to the Finals. The very last qualifier, in the #24 seed, will play the #23 seed in a single-elimination 1v1. The winner will go on to play the #22 seed. The winner of that match will go on to play the #21 seed, so on and so forth until the winner of the match against the #1 seed is crowned champion. As specified in the rules, there is a 10 minute time limit in these matches until the final three. If that time limit is reached, both competitors will drop and the next two seeds will compete and move on. To help keep games on track, "Fast Match" will be activated after 5 minutes in each match as in the Qualifiers.

The final three matches will be played as all the others, with the exception that there will be no time limit. This will ensure that a defined first, second and third place may be identified for the purpose of awarding prizes.

Prizes

Notes: Players may only receive one "physical" prize, and therefore will receive the highest physical prize they qualify for (E.g. The player who wins 2nd Place in the tournament also was King of the Hill in their qualifier room at the end of the qualifiers. They would get the game console, and the second-most-recent King from that room would get the iPod). Armor Sets will be given for the most recent character played in the tournament.

Key Details

Who: 81 teams of 2 (162 players total) with no level restrictions whose Team Captain registers their team on a first-come, first-served basis on the official Tournament Registration thread. All participants’ accounts must have been registered before July 1st, 2009. All participants must have a valid Grand Chase play account and forum account all in good standing (if your Play account or your forum account is banned, you will be disqualified).
What: Single-elimination three-team doubles tournament.
When:

Why: To challenge the members of our community on their teamwork and reaction speed by giving them a teammate to rely on against two opposing teams of two each, but with the additional threat of "friendly fire".

Format Explanation: Your team will consist of you and a partner, so pick one of you to be captain and have that player post on the official registration thread with both of your IGNs, as well as your Team's Name. The first 81 teams to legitimately register will be entered in the tournament.
When your time comes to fight, you and your partner will be brought into a room with two other teams. Three teams will fight in each room, and only the winning team will advance to the next round. Since the room will be set in "Survival" mode, you CAN damage and even kill your own teammate!
This is not advised.
Your team's score is determined by the combination of both teammates' deaths and kills, as well as the time of elimination (if applicable) for each teammate. The team with the fewest deaths is the winner (since the game only ends when all opponents are dead, this means whichever team has a player left standing is the winner). In the event of a tie (for second place), the team with the most kills is the winner. In the event of a further tie, the team that was eliminated last is the winner.

Prizes:

Notes: Each prize listed in the highest tier a team qualifies for will be given to all registered team members on the roster, Armor Sets will be given for the most recent character played in the tournament. (Ex. Winning team plays Elesis and Lire in the final round, but Elesis and Lass in the Final Four. Their alternate played Ronan in the Round of 32, but played Elesis in the sweet sixteen round. Black Champion Armor Set will be given for Elesis, Lire, and Elesis respectively.) Each player on the team must fight in at least one tournament round in order to be eligible for prizes.

Nomination: Since the goal of this tournament is to crown an undisputed champion, there are two major changes we're making to our usual formats. First, it's a double-elimination tournament, meaning you have to lose twice before you're out of it. This gives you a chance to have one bad game, or unfortunate disconnection, and still be in the running for championship. Second, we're changing up the way entry into the tournament will be determined with a method never before used in our game.

We're going to turn to the community and ask them to decide who they want to see in this ultimate tournament. Only players with the most nominations will be invited to compete. Because of this, we will be leaving the nomination thread open for a week to be sure that everyone eligible who wants to have a voice can be heard. I would also expect those interested in participating to spend this week in PvP, proving to their peers why they should get votes. This is the place to be if you want to ask questions or post feedback regarding our seventh tournament, "Melee in a Bottle".

Please do not ask any questions that have already been answered in official posts already, we want to keep this thread "clean" for relevant discussion of the tournament. For that same reason, we kindly ask that there be no off-topic chat on this thread. Anything not related to the tournament is considered off-topic.

What we would like to see here, in addition to your questions, are suggestions about how to improve this tournament for future events. If you think there is a better format we should be using, let's hear it. If you disagree with the method of entry or want to see a different bracketing, we're open to suggestions.

To clarify the line on "exploits" in terms that the players have requested in the past: Auto Shot is not okay, grabs are okay, steps are okay, Dark Assassin's "air otto" is not considered an auto shot.

Hail, Knights!

Almost two months since the unpredictable carnage of "Warlord's Gambit", prepare yourselves now for our seventh tournament, "Melee in a Bottle". We are moving back to basics with a 1v1 "duel" format, almost all details identical to our first ever tournament "Royal Rumble".

Key Details

Who: 64 players who register on a first-come, first-served basis on the official Tournament Registration thread.
What: Single-elimination 1 on 1 duel tournament.
When:

Registration: 5:00 PM PDT, Wednesday May 27th

Satellite: 6:00 PM PDT, Wednesday May 27th

Round of 64: 5:00 PM PDT ~ 8:00 PM PDT Thursday, May 28th

Remaining Rounds: 5:00 PM PDT ~ 8:00 PM PDT Friday, May 29th

Where: Gaikoz Server, Free Class PvP, in rooms specifically created and supervised by the GM staff. Players will be invited to the room when their time comes, so ALL PLAYERS must be available from 5:00 ~ 7:00 to play their match.
Why: To recognize and reward players who have taken the time to master their skills in PvP.

Satellite: In the past, we have taken a list of 5 or so "alternates" who will appear in the first round of a tournament to replace competitors who don't show up for their matches. One of the problems with forum registration is that a lot of eligible players are left out. Another big problem we've run into in two-day tournaments is getting all of the players who won on the first day to show up for the second!

So in an attempt to address these two issues, we will be hosting a "satellite" brawl event on Wednesday once registration concludes, to give more players a chance to play. This will be a regular GM Brawl that is open to anyone who isn't registered in the tournament, and will be recognized with normal GM Brawl rewards. At 6:00 PM PDT on Wednesday, GMs will create the brawl rooms with a designated name (announced at the time), open to 5 players (since the GM takes a spot), survival mode, Elven Forest. However, the top fighter in each room (not counting the GM) as measured by the standings--with the last man standing being used as a tiebreaker--will be elevated to the alternates list for the tournament.

In the event that a competitor does not report for their match on Thursday OR Friday, alternate players will be called from the qualifiers list based on RANDOM seeding. Please note that there is no guarantee that all alternates will be called, however in an attempt to use more we will allow replacements in ANY tournament round before the Final Four.

PLAYERS WHO ARE REGISTERED IN THE TOURNAMENT MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE SATELLITE. CHECK THE REGISTRATION THREAD BEFORE 6:00 PM PDT TO SEE IF YOU MADE THE CUT.

As stated in rule 3, the Game Masters are going to be the ones interpreting the rules, so please exercise common sense and competitive integrity when you play.

Official Rules

Exploitation of game mechanics, such as "auto shot", is grounds for immediate disqualification.

No unsportsmanlike conduct.

Game Masters will have the final call in administration of tournament rules.

Arguing with a GM's call in game is grounds for immediate disqualification.

Any match exceeding 20 minutes in length will result in immediate disqualification of both players.

All matches must be played on the Elven Forest map, No Item Mode, in a room designated by the GM.

Post once and only once on the official Registration thread: multiple posts by the same player is grounds for disqualification.

Off-topic posts on the official Registration thread is grounds for disqualification.

The entrant's in-game Nick Name (NOT Account Name) must be provided in the Registration thread.

Tournament brackets will be seeded on a first-come, first-served basis, with no bias.

There will be no gear, character or item restrictions during the tournament. Gear and characters MAY be changed at any time in the tournament room up to 5 seconds prior to match start.
