GC Dictionary: terminology explained for the confused.

Upon first entering into GC, I noticed something: the folks here are VERY difficult to understand.  This is due to the sheer mass of user-created terms that is used on a regular basis.  It is a mess trying to find out the definitions of such terms.  This is the purpose of this Dictionary: to place in one post the definitions to the terms we use regularly.  Some of the terms will also have posts for further information as well.

 

A note: The author of this post can, sadly, still be deemed a newbie to GC, resulting in this thread being a 'blind leading the blind'.  As such, please post if you see any mistakes in any part of the Dictionary.  Along with this, if there is any term that has confused you (even if it is ones described as "Obvious" such as 'lol') then feel free to request that it be added.  While I am not trying to make this the Grand Dictionary of Grand Chase, I want to make sure that it is as helpful as possible. Note, though, that it does assume that you have played and understood the basic mechanics of the game (such as how MP works)

Miscellanious Game Acronyms (examples: AR, AK, GM...)

 

1v1 - In regular chat, this simply refers to a one on one match.  During a team game however, the term takes on an altered meaning.  When one team is down to only one player but the other team has 2 or 3, that player (or sometimes the opposing team) can say "1v1".  If accepted by both sides, only one of the larger team will actively fight the solo opponent.  To perform a true '1v1' the other players are to keep to the side of the map and avoid contact or any action that may affect the fighters (no buffs or taunting either).  If the player on the larger party dies, sometimes that player may keep fighting or else another player may step in to fight, so long as only one person is fighting on the team at one time. Also note that attacking the players that are sitting out is also bad form.

Note that 1v1 is simply a courtesy and NOT a rule, or even an informal moral action.  The community as a whole believes that there is no true obligation in accepting or offering a 1v1, though if 1v1 is accepted then it is improper to dissolve it later.  There is no harm with simply saying "no 1v1" and having everyone jump on the final player.  Also note that events such as players DCing or leaving do not result in an automatic 1v1.  To put it blunty: If you end up fighting 1 vs 3 then you simply need better teammates.

1/2/3 Bar  - This, along with "1/2/3 MP" is used to name the skills used for the characters, based on the bars needed to activate it.  "Lire's 1 bar" refers to her Big Shot skill.

Cable Puller - This is the act of quickly turning off and on your internet connection.  It results in the player not be fully disconnected but lagged.  The character will be frozen to the other players not moving and unable to take damage.  The Puller, however, can move normally and attack.  After a few seconds, the character unfreezes and the actions the Puller performed are put in, usually resulting in them being suddenly next to their opponent, grabbing or performing a skill.  Note that natural lag usually does not result in this, but instead a character that moves normally but 'stutters' and randomly teleports as if the game has a hard time keeping up with them.  A Freeze, followed by a teleport+attack is typical of the Puller, especially if done regularly (once, maybe twice can still be lag). 

Note that this is a reportable offence and is very easy to spot once you are used to seeing it.

Cancelling - A commonly used technique where a move is canceled to perform another move.  This means that the full animation is interrupted and a new one is started.  It is commnly used with specials, but can also apply to normal moves.  It is not to be confused with comboing, as in combos, the full animation is completed.

The easiest example to this is Elesis' 1 bar-mega slash.  Use the skill then charge and use her 2nd bar attack while the first is going.  Instead of completing the first one, you'll see Elesis suddenly jump up and shoot her second skill.  That is a cancel.  Although not a combo, cancelling allows for very powerful attacks as different skills and movements are strung together.

Card - Similar to other games, Grand Chase runs on a Card-based punishment system. Players found doing offensive behavior will be given a card.Yellow Cards are given out as a warning. Red Cards are given out if you gain too many Yellow Cards/do not heed their warning or for a heavy offense: They give a stat and exp reduction. Black Cards are rarely given out, but are for extremely heavy offenses: They also give out a very very heavy stat and exp penalty.

Casher - (Also: Cash Noob) A negative remark given towards those that have utilized the cash shop.  It is deemed an insult used to say that the advantage gained is being used to compensate for a lack of skill.  Note that the general populous does not consider using the Cash Shop as a negative act and the term is mostly used as simply a way to insult a person rather than to mark anything truly meaningful.

Counter  - (Full term: Counter Attack)  It is, contrary to it's name, a defensive move in practice.  It is the act of charging your skill to protect yourself against further attacks.

The concept: Whenever you are charging your MP bar to at least the first bar and become damaged, several things happen: You lose the MP that you had charged, take damage, immediately fall to the floor, and have the words "Counter Attack" show up in a flash.  The idea is that the enemy stopped your skill by hitting you before you can cast it.

The 'defensive' part comes with the 'fall to the floor'.  The fall makes you invincible until you get up (which takes a while).  The effect occurs the MOMENT you face any damage (except when you Defend it, such as when Elesis blocks an arrow).  The point is made clear with an example:  You have your MP bar charged just as Ronin slips in and starts Karavan Strike.  The skill starts and you take the first hit, causing a Counter.  Since the first hit knocks you to the floor, the 30+ hits the skill performs ARE IGNORED DUE TO INVINCIBLITY.  By the time you get up, the skill is over and, instead of dying, you suffer one blow of damage and less MP.

Countering works well for any move that delivers multiple hits, including skills like Meteor and normal combos.  Even if you are being hit currently, once your MP is charged past the first bar, the next hit will be a Counter.  Note that if you do not have enough MP for at least one bar then you cannot Counter . Also note that the main difference between Countering with more MP charged rather than less is that you lose more MP.

Delay - (also known as Freeze) The effect that occurs when a player is around another player casting a skill.  For most skills, such as Stone Curse, there is a period where the screen changes color, and you pose dramatically in a sort of slow mo/still shot.  What you may not have noticed is that any opponent that is near you during this moment is 'locked' in thier place while those far away can move freely.  This affect is called the 'Delay'.  It is in the game to allow you to hit your opponents with your skill without the Anime-style fancy graphics ruining things while not letting the entire map be held up senselessly. 

Many of the more dangerous moves take advantage of the quirky affects of Delay.

Full Run - (also simply "Full) A term used in PvE to mean performing a dungeon run that is fully cleared: every room completed.  Note that runs that are deemed 'Full' are either declared as one by one of the players of the team or else it is written on the title (do not confuse with "Full Room!" which is a default title and means nothing).  Full runs are either done for item collection on certain quests or for additional EXP. 

Grab - Pressing 'Z' when close to your opponent, which results in you performing an up close move to damage your opponent.  Note that while Dashing or other actions can help improve your chances of grabbing, only the 'Z' itself is truly required. 

             Air grab - A grab performed while in the air.  Note that there is nothing special between a normal (land) grab and an airgrab: it is labled due to the fact that many have been surprised to the fact that you can perform a grab while in midair.  Further Information

             Delay grab - When you have Delayed your opponent using a skill, there is a moment when you come out of your motion but your opponent is not out of Delay.  This can allow for you to perform a grab against them.  Note that lag is not required to perform this move, but the addition of lag can greatly improve your ability to delay grab.  Also note that some skills are easier to grab with than others.

             Chain grab - Grabbing a person more than one time before they finish falling.  To understand this, note that when you are falling down, from a grab or another attack, you are NOT invincible until you have finished falling.  Thus, if they grab you, and you slip off a ledge you are STILL vulnerable to attacks, such as another grab.  Even once on the ground, if your character is still dropping to the floor they can STILL be grabbed.  Thus, the Chain grab: grabbing someone on a ledge so that they will fall of of it, following them to the ground, then grabbing them again.  This can be repeated until your character has finished falling completely (thus activating Invincibilty).

             Lag grab - Not an term as such as it is a general reference to the effect lag has on grabbing.  Effects such as being 'teleported' into a grab, or having a skill already starting then stopped by a grab is, in fact, the effect that lag has on the game.  Note that it is more of an illusion, based on the fact that what you see on the screen is NOT what is truely happening in the game.  Note that grabbing cannot break any real rule, only 'seem' to do so by the way lag works.

Half Run - A term used in PvE to mean performing a dungeon run that is partially cleared: some of the extra rooms completed but not all of them.  The original definition of Half would be "only doing Single Room Extensions (Doing one room on a branch instead of doing all three)" (newcodeF1), although this has evolved over time.  The safest bet is to simply follow the one that declared the Half run and let them decide which rooms will be completed.

Infinite - Most combos have an 'end', usually resulting in a knock down.  Some, however, are 'Infinite', that is you can keep performing the move until something else gets in the way (the target getting away, you getting hit, running out of room, ext).  The earliest example is Elesis' 4 hit combo.  To perform it, Press Z 4 times and pause then hit Z a few more times instead of the normal 5 presses (alternative: keep pressing Z until she is about to do her 'double stab' part of her combo, then pause until she's about finished and attack again). Done right, she will not do her final swing (which knocks the enemy down) and, instead, do the first move of her combo again.  Note that the 'restarted combo' counts as part of your combo score.  Also note that if you keep doing that, you can keep her attacking over and over.  That is an infinite.

There is also an 'Infinite Arial' where some characters can perform an infinite amount of aerial attacks until they touch the ground instead of perform one and being stuck in that animation.  This characters include and are not limited to Archer, Xbow, Arcranger, Thief, Sentinel's Air Dash Attack, and Xeno in dual pike mode.

Invinciblity - While there is an item with the name, the term is most used to describe the moments when a player cannot be harmed by attacks.  Characters performing a skill are Invincible during the duration of the skill, as are players that have just been knocked to the floor (though not during the fall itself).  Effective fighting in GC involves utilizing these moments to protect yourself against attack.  Elesis' Mega Slash (1 bar) is most noted for its incredibly long Invincibility.

Juggle - Keeping an enemy in the air with attacks.  

Knockdown  - When someone is knocked to the ground by an attack.  Although a common term in most games, the way that GC handles a knockdown causes players to take special note.  Monsters and Players that are knocked down become invincible until they stand back up.  Also, most characters, some monsters, and any monster with Shockwave, have a 'get up attack' where they can hit nearby opponents while standing up.  In PvP, this becomes a strategy in itself when Countering is applied. 

Meanwhile, knockdown management is the heart PvE tactics.  Since a monster knocked down cannot be harmed, and some can harm you back afterwards, it is in the players' best interests to avoid knocking a monster down whenever possible.  For example, in PvE guides, such as this one, most of the tips given involve how to fight without knocking down the enemy.

Lag - When two computers attempt to communicate, such as when attempting to work together a game of GC, the distance and congestion of the connection can cause a delay between when one computer sends and the other one recieves.  This is the creation of lag.  Lag performs rather interesting effects in GC.  While the communication-and thus your actions- are delayed, your screen is updated by your own computer in real time, resulting in your screen showing something different from what is truely going on.  This is the basis behind lag within PvP

Lag in PvE is most noticed when it is centered around the Host player.  Since it is this player's computer that handles monster movement, lag from here will cause monsters to 'stagger' and, at worst, freeze along with the Host.  Note that if lag causes an enemy freeze, the level cannot continue until the Host fixes the problem or leaves the room.

Leech - Any bloodsucking or carnivorous aquatic or terrestrial worm of the pits of PvE.

Leeches are players who join in a PvE dungeon but do not participate: simply sit there and wait for everyone else to finish the dungeon.  Unlike those who have simply slipped AFK (which is acceptable, if annoying), leeches are looked upon as useless worms by the community.  In GC, it's pretty easy to leech since most parties are set to Group drop (thus everyone gets items) and exp/GP is always shared even if you die and do nothing.  On the good side, leeches do little to actually harm the party: Few parties require all 4 people, the exp the fighters get is slightly boosted due to the additional member, and the most important items that drop are handed directly to players and aren't affected by teammates. 

Still, the concept of people simply using others for easy gains is not a pretty one to many.  Also, leeching, even in high level areas, is a slower rate of exp than playing on maps made for your level (both because leeches aren't helping and also because joining areas well above your level lowers the exp gained by you).  It is highly unrecommended to leech.

Otto - The act of performing an 'unlimited combo' of single hits rather than a normally done combo.  The attacks are noticable due to a sort of 'smoke and fire' that comes from the attacks. It results in a combo that can only be stopped by moves such as Countering (rather than a normal combo, which eventually ends).

Note that Otto is the most contriversial of moves (though not the most discussed: grabbing gets that reward).  According to GMLoki Otto is technically legal (as in, you will not be banned) but hated by the Powers That Be resulting in disqualification in tornaments and the general kind of risks that occur when you annoy the Powers That Be.  Given that, this dictionary will not list methods on how to perform an otto.

Rush - A term used in PvE to mean performing a dungeon run that moves strait for the Boss room, ignoring all uneccessary rooms in the process.  In dungeon runs where nothing is mentioned, it is assumed to be a Rush.  Note that quests that require you to complete a dungeon can be completed in Rush form. 

Spam - The technical definition of Spam in GC is the act of using one type of attack to the exclusion of anything else.  Similar to other terms, such as 'noob', it is used often to describe any move that is done regularly (with 'regularly' sometimes meaning 'once').  It is disliked by much of the community but is legal by all accounts of the law. 

Step - An general term to refer to moves that utilize dash for quick mobility.  Note that the terms have blended and evolved to the point where it is difficult to tell which term refers to what action. 

          If there is one Step that is best noted, it is the Flash Step, performable by Elesis.  It is an awkward move that allows for incredibly fast movement without all of the vertical movement.  It is, in essense, dashing, jumping to air dash to the ground, and repeat, in such a quick succession that the character never really leaves the ground.  

Command: Forward, Down, Forward, Up, Down    Note that the last two commands (up, down) are done VERY quickly, and will be the most difficult part of the move.  If the character jumps, you slipped on the forward motions.  If your character slides on the ground, THEN jumps, your Down wasn't fast enough.  You've almost got it when you slide but make a MUCH smaller jump.  Success is when you can't notice the jump at all.

Swapper - Someone who wishes to trade wins in PvP.   Many of the quests in GC require fighting in PvP, usually requiring either a set number of wins or kills.  Some players, to complete the quest, make requests such as 'I win, you win', where instead of a normal match a match is started where they kill you to win, then let you kill them. 

Note that Swapping is not only looked poorly upon, but is also a reportable offense.  It is highly recommended to avoid any such actions.

I agree with you, some people in the Grand Chase Community is almost impossible to understand.

Anyways, great job! I'm really sure this would help somebody.

P.S. I would like to request a Grand Chase forum dictionary (posted in the Off-topic section) for all the newbies :D

Oo, That is nice!  The thing is that some of the terms just seem to be not used currently (i.e. much of the Negative terms).  I'll make use of the ones that seem to be still in use and go from there.  Thanks for leading me to it.

Please add the following, a few of which I made up and aren't well known.

 

Reverse Special - Charging for a sepcial during a frame where you can not move.  While charging, hold the opposite direction.  Unleash the special the split moment you are able to move again and when it is unleashed, it will be performed in the direction you are holding without your character having to turn around first.

 

Cancelling - A commonly used technique where a move is canceled to perform another move.  This means that the full animation is interrupted and a new one is started.  It is commnly used with specials, but can also apply to normal moves.  It is not to be confused with comboing, as in combos, the full animation is completed.

 

Air Dancing - When using a special on a ledge or when a special sends you off a ledge, you can control which direction you can move it.  While in the air, you can move yourself forwards or backwards to control where you land and even perform aerial combos given the correct circumstances.  it works best with long start up or long specials in general.

 

Infinite Aerials - Some characters can perform an infinite amount of aerial attacks until they touch the ground instead of perform one and bing suck in that animation.  This characters include and are not limited to Archer, Xbow, Arcranger, Thief, Sentinel's Air Dash Attack, and Xeno in dual pike mode.

Leech - Dictionary.com definition (I personally like the first one but the second one will do...) You can make your own definition if you like, but this one is pretty well known.
