The best character and class is the one you like most. A person that does not like what he/she has or what he/she is doing is not going to have the passion to bring out the best of what they have.
im no expert, but i think ronan is the best for pvp
All depends on how well you use each character, 'nuff said. Try them all out. You might be good with PvE on some characters, and vise versa.

Whichever character you feel most comfortable playing will always be the one you do best with. Each of the 3 first characters has an advantage over one other (similar to paper scisors rock). As for the extra characters, things get a bit more complicated...
Try before you buy is about all I can say XD
There's a couple of ways you can look at this.
A.) Focus on a single character, develop your expertise and strategies around that character, level only that character. Know that character, be that character.
B.) Use all your characters about equally. Get good with all of them. Switch characters depending upon your situation. (PvM, dungeon with lots of snarky monsters -> Arme, drop Meteor to help clear the room faster; PvP vs Lire -> Elesis, block her arrows etc.)
Me, I'm sort of at a crossroads between Elesis and Arme. I just know I don't like Lire and I'm sick of seeing Ronan and Lass EVERYWHERE because the boys are too insecure to play a girl character if they don't have to. =P
You can't say who's the best and who isn't. Everyone has their own Pros and Cons (Good Things and Bad Things).
I'm going to bed now..i'm feeling very weak...and tired...
ALl the characters r basically equal if ur playing survival or 3v3.
But in 1v1, tiers will come into play as u advance in the metagame.
Elesis(knight) is the best at metagame as she can otto, shadow step, flash step and demon step. Her dash attack is very good too,
having a large hit box.
But keep in mind that tiers don't matter so much as sumtimes it is all up to chances in a match.

Very well put. I prefer Ronan because its a melee class but its versatile as well. I hate Arme which is why I never use her but I play with Armes often and they can be quite strong. The other aspect you should look as is use all of them. I am currently leveling all the characters by intervals of 10 so all of my characters will be powerful but I can also have my choice on which one I feel like using.
